Originally built by barbarian-conquering generalissimo Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, but reconstructed many times due to fire. Recent excavations have unearthed large amounts of kawarake (unglazed ritual earthenware) from the Ōshū Fujiwara era. Additionally, the importance of this site has been corroborated by the discovery of stone pond embankments. Don't miss the giant Buddha carved into the temple ground’s rock face.
