Chūsonji Temple (Special Historic Site)

Commissioned by Fujiwara no Kiyohira, this great monastery covers the whole of Kanzan. Of all Chūsonji’s original buildings, only the Konjikidō (Golden Hall) remains. In addition to five later structures designated Important Cultural Properties (the Sutra Repository, Former Konjikidō Sheath Hall, stone Ganjōjuin and Five-Tiered Shakuson'in Stupas, and outdoor Noh stage), many original archeological sites remain well preserved.

Konjikidō (National Treasure)

Completed in 1124 by Fujiwara no Kiyohira, the Konjikidō is the only extant Ōshū Fujiwara-built structure. The hall is covered inside and out with gold leaf. The three interior daises, decorated with gold, silver, inlaid mother-of-pearl, and maki-e (“sprinkled pictures”), hold the mummified remains of the first three Ōshū Fujiwara lords and the severed head of the fourth. The symbol of the culture of Hiraizumi.
